MANGGARAI, PENA1NTT.COM – In the modern era, supported by rapid technological development, accessing information has become easier through the internet and various digital platforms.

People can now obtain news and knowledge within seconds. However, this convenience does not always have a positive impact on reading habits.

Today, many young people prefer consuming visual content such as short videos and social media rather than reading books or more in-depth written materials.

One of the factors contributing to the decline in reading interest is the change in how people consume information.

Digital content is generally presented in a brief, engaging, and easily understandable format. As a result, young people tend to become accustomed to receiving information instantly without further reading.

This habit can affect critical thinking skills because their understanding of a topic may become less comprehensive.

Furthermore, technological advancements have changed the way people spend their leisure time.

In the past, reading was one of the favorite activities, but now much of people’s attention is occupied by social media and digital entertainment.

Moreover, digital platform algorithms are designed to keep users engaged for as long as possible, reducing the time available for reading.

The decline in reading culture can lead to various negative impacts. A lack of reading habits may limit knowledge, affect language skills, and reduce analytical and problem-solving abilities.

In fact, these skills are highly needed in both education and the increasingly competitive job market.

Nevertheless, this change does not mean that young people have lost their enthusiasm for learning. What has changed is merely the medium used to obtain information.

Therefore, various innovations are needed, such as digital books, interactive reading applications, and online literacy communities to ensure that reading culture continues to grow.

The roles of families and schools are also crucial in fostering reading habits from an early age.

Ultimately, reading serves as an essential foundation for both individual and societal development.

Amid the overwhelming flow of information, the ability to read deeply has become an increasingly valuable skill.

Young people need to understand that reading is not merely an academic activity but also a long-term investment in improving personal quality and preparing for the future.
