MANGGARAI, PENA1NTT.COM – The rapid development of digital technology has brought significant changes to people’s lives, especially for teenagers.

The presence of social media, instant messaging applications, and various digital platforms has made communication, information access, and self-expression easier than ever.

However, behind these benefits, the digital era also presents challenges that cannot be ignored, particularly regarding teenagers’ mental health.

Today, many teenagers spend a large portion of their time online. They interact through social media, follow trends, and remain constantly connected to the digital world.

According to DataReportal (2025), internet users worldwide spend an average of more than 6 hours per day online.

This situation often creates psychological pressure. Many teenagers feel the need to appear perfect in order to gain acceptance from their peers.

They compare themselves to others whose lives seem more attractive, successful, or happier on social media. In reality, what is displayed online does not always reflect real life.

In addition, cyberbullying has become a serious threat to teenagers’ mental well-being. According to UNICEF (2023), approximately one in three young people in many countries has experienced cyberbullying.

Negative comments, insults, and the spread of false information can lead to stress, anxiety, and even depression. In some cases, the pressure experienced by victims of cyberbullying can reduce self-confidence and negatively affect academic performance.

Mental health is just as important as physical health. The World Health Organization (WHO, 2024) reports that one in seven adolescents aged 10–19 years experiences a mental health disorder.

Teenagers with good mental health are better able to manage their emotions, cope with challenges, build healthy relationships, and make wise decisions.

On the other hand, mental health problems can hinder personal development and reduce overall quality of life.

Therefore, teenagers need to learn how to use technology wisely. Limiting time spent on social media, choosing positive content, and avoiding dependence on online validation are important steps in maintaining mental well-being.

Furthermore, teenagers should make time for face-to-face interactions with family and friends, engage in physical activities, develop hobbies, and participate in activities that promote personal well-being.

The role of parents, schools, and society is also essential. Parents should establish open communication with their children so that they feel comfortable sharing their experiences and concerns.

Schools can provide education on digital literacy and mental health awareness, while communities should create supportive environments that encourage positive youth development.

The digital era does not have to be a threat to teenagers’ mental health. With responsible use of technology, support from family and society, and a conscious effort to balance online and offline life, teenagers can grow into confident, resilient, and mentally healthy individuals.

Mental health should never be overlooked; it is a valuable investment in the future of the younger generation.
