MANGGARAI, PENA1NTT.COM – In today’s digital era, social media has become an inseparable part of teenagers’ daily lives. Among various platforms, TikTok is one of the most popular applications worldwide.

According to DataReportal (2025), TikTok has more than one billion active users globally, with a significant proportion consisting of teenagers and young adults.

This growing popularity has transformed TikTok from a platform for entertainment into a space where educational content can be accessed quickly and easily.

As a result, an important question emerges: does TikTok truly support students’ learning, or does it create more obstacles than opportunities?

On the one hand, TikTok offers several educational benefits. The platform provides short and engaging videos that help students understand complex topics in a simpler way.

Educational content related to science, mathematics, languages, history, and study skills can be found easily through personalized recommendations.

Research has shown that visual and interactive learning materials can increase students’ motivation and engagement in the learning process.

Furthermore, TikTok allows learners to access educational information anytime and anywhere, making learning more flexible and accessible. These advantages demonstrate how social media can complement traditional educational resources.

However, TikTok also presents challenges for teenagers. The platform’s algorithm is designed to maximize user engagement, encouraging continuous scrolling and prolonged screen time.

Studies have indicated that excessive social media use can reduce concentration, increase procrastination, and negatively affect academic performance.

Teenagers may initially access TikTok for educational purposes but eventually spend much more time consuming entertainment content.

As a result, valuable study time may be lost, and students may struggle to maintain focus on academic responsibilities. Therefore, without proper self-regulation, TikTok can become a significant distraction rather than an educational tool.

To maximize the benefits of TikTok while minimizing its negative effects, several concrete actions should be taken.

Schools can incorporate digital literacy programs that teach students how to evaluate online content critically and manage screen time effectively. Parents can establish clear guidelines regarding social media use and encourage balanced daily routines.

In addition, students can utilize features such as screen-time limits, focus modes, and learning-oriented content preferences to maintain healthy digital habits.

Through these practical measures, TikTok can be used more responsibly as a learning resource.

In conclusion, TikTok has the potential to be both an opportunity and an obstacle for teenagers.

Its educational content can enhance learning experiences and provide easy access to information, yet its addictive nature may interfere with students’ academic performance.

Rather than viewing TikTok as entirely beneficial or harmful, society should focus on promoting responsible and purposeful use of the platform.

When supported by digital literacy, self-discipline, and proper guidance, TikTok can become a valuable educational tool that contributes positively to teenagers’ academic development instead of hindering it.
