MANGGARAI, PENA1NTT.COM – The rising crime rate among teenagers today is becoming an increasingly alarming issue. Many cases, such as fights, theft, bullying, and alcohol addiction, often involve school-aged children.
According to a 2023 report by the Indonesian Child Protection Commission, the rate of juvenile delinquency in Indonesia has risen to 17.5%.
Additionally, 3,883 cases of child rights violations were reported, the majority of which involved sexual crimes and physical violence.
This phenomenon particularly targets minors, who should still be in the process of discovering their identity and developing positive character traits.
This indicates that an increasing number of adolescents are engaging in negative behaviors that harm both themselves and others.
Adolescents who should be focusing on education and self-development are instead falling into legal violations. If this situation continues, the nation’s future may be threatened by the moral decline of the next generation.
To understand why crime rates among adolescents are rising, we need to examine the factors closest to them, starting with family relationships and environmental influences.
Young people often get into legal trouble due to the influence of dysfunctional family relationships and a lack of parental attention and affection. An unsupportive or toxic social environment is also a major trigger.
This situation leads many adolescents to eeking unfair solutions, which lead to involvement in promiscuity and unethical behavior, such as robbery, assault, and even fatal violence.
Another factor exacerbating this situation is the lack of education in moral and religious values, as well as the negative influence of social media that is not monitored by parents.
These factors significantly affect the mental state and personality of adolescents, often leading to a narrow-minded and impulsive mindset.
As a result, they commit reckless acts without considering long-term consequences, merely to satisfy their egos or fleeting desires.
If left unaddressed, this problem will continue to spread like a destructive root, affecting not just one or two individuals but an entire future generation.
This is not a trivial issue that can be resolved through mere discourse, as it has the potential to destroy the future of those considered the pillars of the nation.
The impact of juvenile crime is felt not only by the victims but also has a devastating domino effect on the perpetrators and their families.
Teenagers involved in criminal activities are at high risk of facing legal sanctions and having a negative social record.
This situation is undoubtedly a significant obstacle to their future education and careers, as a bad record often blocks opportunities for advancement professional advancement.
On the other hand, victims of crime suffer prolonged physical and psychological trauma, wphich ultimately leads to social unrest due to a sense of insecurity.
Furthermore, this problem can spread like wildfire, devastating an entire generation. If young people often hailed as the nation’s future leaders lose their way and become entangled in legal cases, the nation will lose its greatest potential.
Failing to address juvenile crime means allowing their futures to be ruined, rendering them unable to face the challenges of the coming era, and creating a future crisis of leadership and character.
Therefore, preventive efforts must be undertaken collectively by families, schools, and the community. Parents need to foster open and loving communication to give their children their full attention.
Schools must also strengthen character education and provide spaces for students to develop their talents and interests. Through these steps, adolescents can focus on positive activities that support their personal development.
Furthermore, the government and society must play an active role by providing facilities that support adolescent creativity and enhance their understanding of moral and religious values.
Solid cooperation among all parties is necessary to ensure that adolescents do not stray from the right path. With effective synergy, crime rates among adolescents can be reduced.
